The Finding of Phosphorus

Brandt's significant breakthrough occurred when he chose to test with urine. He gathered approximately 1,200 gallons and simmered it for two weeks. After evaporating the liquid, he combined it with sand and charcoal and applied high heat. 

Unexpectedly, this procedure generated a white mist that converted into a shining, wax-like material. Brandt had extracted phosphorus, a term meaning "light-bearer" in Greek, as it shines in the dark.
